Why Support Canteen? This is my Story and the Story of other young people!
In 2017 when I was 13, I was diagnosed with AML Leukemia, over the last 6 years since diagnosis I have battled depression, chronic pain, going from being a "normal person" to being told I have dyslexia, to trying to fit in with "Normal people", and having to have multiple surgeries to help with the side effects of the treatment.
We all go through different things when someone is diagnosed with Cancer. The person diagnosed with Cancer has to cope with the belief that they will die or not be able to live life properly again, as well as coping with the pain, to the good and bad nurses and doctors, to the multiple different tests and treatments, to having to take multiple tablets, the little things make the difference to a good or bad day. While the family has to cope with the loss of a parent while one parent spends time in hospital, to having to cope with the hospital, the uncertainty and the thoughts of never seeing a beloved sibling or parent again.
Canteen helps with these feelings of uncertainty by helping to provide a supportive atmosphere to any young person affected by cancer. They also provide counseling and many opportunities to build friendships with other young people in similar positions to what your family finds themself in once someone has been diagnosed with Cancer.
This year I will be cutting my hair with a goal of reaching $500 in donations which will go to help support Canteen provided services to other young people, this will be the first time in 6 years since loosing my hair to treatment that I will be cutting my hair properly. My hair is now waist long and it has taken a long time to get to this point.
