I'm taking part in Canteen's Bandanna Day!
As a young boy, my life was turned upside down when my brother received a diagnosis of cancer. Living in a small country town meant that I was distant from many social services that could help me in this situation - it also meant that I was now a four hour drive away from my mother and brother who were in Sydney so that he could receive treatment. I lived with my aunt and uncle for over a year, who were brilliant, but I was very much missing my own family.
It was an isolating time in my life.
Canteen was there when I needed them. They sought support for me. After being referred to the organisation, I received a phone call from another member - another young person like me who was being impacted by cancer. I agreed to go to an outing hosted by the organisation and this was the first step in changing my cancer story. I would no longer be a scared 13 year old boy - the young people and professionals I met through the program shaped me into a teenager empowered to handle his messy, chaotic world.
I am raising money this year to celebrate those that survived, support those that are battling and honour those that we have lost.
Canteen’s scope and determination is unlike any other organisation for young people living with cancer. It’s mission is vast and challenging, as it aims to help not only patients, but their loved ones as well.
I’m taking part in Canteen’s Bandanna Day this year by selling bandannas to support young people impacted by cancer.
